The dramatic, fluid style that most people picture when they hear voguing. Judged on control, musicality and how completely you commit to the performance — not on how loud you are.

Waacking
Not a ballroom category
Not a ballroom style, and we say so every time we teach it. Waacking was born in the disco clubs of Los Angeles, a decade before vogue took its shape. We teach it as its own form, with its own history and its own music.

Madrid, then Paris, then Cologne since 2018. Obsessed with the geometry of Old Way and with the shoulder mobility that New Way quietly requires. Runs the mobility block at the start of every class and will not skip it, however loudly the room asks.

Born in Nippes, trained in waacking long before they ever saw a ball, and careful to keep the two histories apart in class. Handles the Haus commentary desk at the Kiki Ball and books the guest teachers.

Credit where it is due
Where this comes from
Ballroom is not ours. It was built in Harlem by Black and Latino LGBTQ+ people — trans women and femme queens above all — who were pushed out of the pageants and the clubs that were supposed to be for everyone, and who made something better instead. Drag balls in New York go back to the nineteenth century. The modern house system dates from the early 1970s, when Crystal LaBeija stopped competing in other people’s contests and founded a house of her own.
The categories we teach, the way a floor is judged, the idea that a house can be a family when the one you were born into is not — all of it comes from those people, and from decades of others who kept it alive through the AIDS crisis, through poverty and through violence that is still not over. Many of them are not famous and many of them are not alive.
Vogue Haus Köln is a kiki house on the Rhine — part of the kiki scene, a parallel, community-run circuit that grew in the 2000s to give younger and newer people somewhere to walk. We are participants in a lineage, not its authors, and we invented none of it. So we teach the history alongside the steps, we pay Black and Latinx teachers from the scene properly when they come to Cologne, and the floor here belongs first to the queer and trans people of colour in this city.

The room itself
Two studios behind a shopfront on Darmstädter Straße: a long sprung floor for runway work and a mirrored room for detail. Step-free from the street, all-gender changing rooms, a quiet corner with a door that closes. No photography during class unless the whole room says yes.

How a ball is scored
Plain definitions, so nothing on the board needs explaining twice.
Walking
Entering a category and competing in it. You walk a category; you do not simply dance at a ball.
Chop
When the judges cut a walker who has not met the standard of the category. The commentator calls it, the walker leaves the floor, and it is not personal.
10s across the board
Every judge on the panel holds up a ten. The highest score there is: the walker goes straight through, no cut, no argument.
House
A chosen family that trains and walks together, led by a mother and/or a father. Houses compete against one another and look after their own.
007
A walker who belongs to no house. It is a status, not an insult, and 007s win categories all the time.
Kiki
The parallel, community-run scene that grew in the 2000s so that younger and newer people had somewhere to walk. It feeds the mainstream scene rather than replacing it. Vogue Haus Köln is a kiki house.
Grand prize
The top prize of the night, awarded across the categories. At our balls it is a cash prize, and the amount is announced before anyone walks.
Commentator
The voice on the microphone who runs the floor, calls the categories and keeps the room moving. Not a DJ and not a host — a role of its own.
